What began in 2016 under the thoughtful care of Catherine has been reimagined and lovingly revitalized by Dr. Ashlyn Szilva-Krause, who brings both a scholarly love of literature and a deeply personal vision for what a neighborhood bookstore can be.

Located in the heart of Lafayette, New Jersey, Black Dog Books is a small, independent bookstore with a big personality. We carry new and used titles across fiction, fantasy, romance, and children’s literature, along with special editions and gifts for readers of every age and aesthetic. Our vibe? School book fair, but for grown-ups too. It’s a little nostalgic, a little chaotic, and always full of heart.

A published academic and lifelong book lover, Dr. Ashlyn Szilva-Krause is passionate about storytelling, community, and creating inclusive spaces for readers and writers alike. She’s the force behind our monthly Open Mic Nights — held the fourth Saturday of every month — where local authors, poets, and artists come together to share their work in a supportive, creative space.

And, of course, no visit is complete without meeting Anya, our chiweenie-in-residence and professional greeter. She’ll welcome you at the door, sniff your tote bag, and silently judge your taste in fiction (unless it’s excellent, which we assume it is).

Whether you're a longtime reader or just discovering the magic of independent bookstores, we invite you to stop in, explore the stacks, and stay awhile. Black Dog Books is more than a shop — it's a story in progress. Come be part of the next chapter.

I once read 257 books in a year and felt bad about it. And now it’s my job.

To be genuine though my life feels like a hallmark movie. Everyday I wake up is a great day to sell books.
